A high performing computer is a must these days. With internet connection going faster and new programs being developed, our computers may not be able to handle them all. That is why it is essential that we know how to make our PC perform faster.
First off, doing these methods won't make your old computer faster than it ever was when you first bought it. The steps provided below will make your computer organized and run faster than it does now. People who are already knowledgeable about computers knows these simple, yet, effective steps already.
Do a disk cleanup - Each time you use your computer, either running programs, opening files, browsing the internet, downloading various things, your computer saves a record. In time, all of these saved files and records will take up a lot of space in your hard disk, preventing your computer from finding the program you have commanded to open.
Its like looking for a needle in a haystack, the more hay there is, the slower the computer can find the needle so to speak. When you do a disk cleanup, the computer would ask for your permission to delete some of these files which have been left unused for a period of time.
To do a disk cleanup, click Start, then go to all programs, accessories, system tools then click on disk cleanup. A box will pop out asking you which drive to do a clean up on, in case you have several partitions or more than one hard drive). Click OK, then another box will pop out showing which files you can delete. Choose carefully and if you're not sure, don't erase the file.
Defrag your PC - Defragmenting your computer means organizing and arranging your files to follow a certain order and maximize the space available. It's like putting order in a room. This way, the computer can easily find the files or programs that it needs to access, thus making your computer perform faster.
go through and just delete stuff that you do not need anymore and if you need all of it get a flash drive and back some stuff up so you and delete it.
Could be affected with a trojan or virus, could have a lot of things loaded in memory.
best advice for a slow computer, is to backup everything, and reload it. If it's still slow, test the memory out or if you have 256 MB ram, increase to 512MB ram or more.. couldn't hurt.
you could clean your whole hard drive but i would suggest upgrading the RAM.
right click on 'my computer' and click 'properties' to find out how much RAM you have. i would suggest having at least a GB of RAM. i have 1.25 gigs on mine and in my opinion it's still not fast enough.
Add some Ram and get an external Hard drive
Make sure you backup important stuff in case it shuts down. Get it checked to see if you have a virsus. If you don't then you need get more RAM I recommend Kingston 1GB Ram. We always have it on sale at Circuit City. It will make the laptop go a lot faster. Don't install it your self though get someone who knows how to do it. If you don't know what your doing you can wipeout your whole system completly.
Go to the internet and download System Mechanic, you get to try it free for 30 days, it will tune-up your laptop in all area's and it will run much faster.

I would also buy some more random memory and stick in it..makes programs run great!!
Reinstall Windows with XP. Put a gig of ram in it. Install anti-virus and anti-spyware before anything else. Be cautious of websites you aren't familiar with.
If you don't want to reinstall Windows, go to Start->Run-> then type msconfig —> hit enter and go to the startup tab–> take all the checkmarks out except for your antivirus (if you know which ones are your antivirus). This is important on any computer. Keep as little in your startup as possible. Also once you do get viruses, sometimes you can stop them simply from taking them out of the startup menu (the simple ones anyway)…
A much easier way is to throw it away and get something that isn't Compaq haha. No j/k I just don't like Compaqs myself…
You may need more RAM, or ur cpu is too slow. To fix the Ram problem, u have to create more virtual memory. Right Click My computer and hit properties. Then, click on advanced and hit settings under performance. A new screen pops up, and hit the advanced tab on that. click change at the bottom. A new screen comes up. When you see Initial Size (MB) or something along those lines and then a textbox, change the number in the text box to atleast 50-75 mb higher. Keep repeating this. if the top textbox exceeds to bottom textbox, change to bottom one to exceed the one above. That should fix it!
First download Ad-Aware and Spybot and run them. Then run an up-to-date anti-virus program. Then go through and delete any programs you don't use (i.e. WeatherBug and the AOL Toolbar). If all of that doesn't work back the whole thing up and reformat it.
