Can I buy a HP notebook that has Vista preinstalled and put XP on it myself?
I am looking to buy a new HP notebook. I currently have a ZD7000, and need a upgrade. I am looking at the HP dv6500t but new HPs only come with Vista on it. All I have heard are horrible things about Vista. Is there a way I can uninstall vista and put XP on it when I get it. Or should I just buy the new Dell 1520 because Dell gives the choice of Vista or XP?

Can be done but you’ll need to factor in the cost of the XP install unless you have a shrink wrap lying around.
The above link has excellent and detailed instructions taking you through the XP roll back on your chosen HP laptop.
If you like getting your hands dirty go for it.
Otherwise maybe go for an XP preinstalled alternative like you suggest.
I haven’t used either machine so can’t give you any meaningful buying advice although I have had good experiences with Dell.
Did find a side by side comparison of both laptops.
